Fernando Pelaez-Pier, the president of the International Bar Association, visited Estonia
From September 6 – 7, the president of the International Bar Association (IBA), Mr. Fernando Pelaez-Pier visited in Estonia. During his two-day visit the president met with the Estonian Bar Association, the Minister of Justice as well as paid a visit to Raidla Lejins & Norcous office in Tallinn.
Jüri Raidla, the managing partner of Raidla Lejins & Norcous Estonia said that it is a great honour to receive such a high-level person to visit Estonia and share the global experience gathered throughout the years. “The highly professional and diversified international conferences arranged by IBA provide new opportunities for lawyers worldwide, including us, to obtain and exchange experiences on the developments in legal practice. Being a member of the IBA makes us a part of the global legal community and creates broad international dimension in our activity", Raidla commented.
During the meeting with the Minister of Justice, Mr. Rein Lang, the President introduced the main goals and functions of the IBA and exchanged ideas on further cooperation possibilities. As Mr. Pelaez-Pier commented, the main goal of the IBA is to co-operate with the Estonian Bar Association and share their best practice. Among other issues, the President emphasized the importance of the Institute of Human Rights, which was set up by the International Bar Association.
The Minister of Justice added that the issue of human rights is very important for Estonia. „European institutions that operate with human rights, certainly need an objective partner in Estonia“, he said. Mr. Lang also made a suggestion to the Estonian Bar Association to establish an objective human rights institute that assembles the respective competence in Estonia.
IBA has a membership of more than 35,000 individual lawyers, bar associations and law societies. It has considerable expertise in providing assistance to the global legal community. The world’s leading organization of international legal practitioners was established in 1947.
